The other side of Cairo

There are the Pyramids and than there is that side of Cairo which is not mentioned by the guidebooks. Despite hosting one of the world's biggest tourist attraction and accomodating millions and millions of tourists each year Cairo is one of the filthiest cities I've ever been too. Unfortunately I did not take enough pictures but at some parts of the city all you can see is garbage everywhere. Even if you look at the Nile... the first thing you notice is not the 2nd biggest and most culture rich river of the world but that you need to look very hard to see where the river is below all that junk. Very disappointing. After seeing all the filth I was not even surprised to see sheeps and goats in the middle of one of the busiest street of the city (just next to Four Seasons actually!!!). A cultural experience for sure.

This really is a peek beyond the guidebooks.. kind of makes me reevaluate my idealized notions of Cairo.

Very interesting. I always think of the locals who work in the luxury hotels and then go home to THAT... I wonder how they feel?

for some reason the picture of that donkey with the watermelons makes me so sad. It's like . . . donkeys exist to carry loads for humans, or something. :(

you know, if i travel i always want to see the country HOW it is for real... it´s awful to stay in the hotel the whole time, it´s better to explore the country and see every side of it... if good or bad.

It’s so important to visit the local towns away from all the tourist attractions...and see how the real thing looks like....I have to say... I love those photos...It really shows what I read about it...So sad...but so true for many turist oriented places...:)

So, Tuesday 3:30pm works for me....I will think of a nice place and let you know :)

It's good you posted these pictures. The other side of Cairo, you know I wouldn't say the "Real" or what not. But is one layer of the big cake. It's important tourists see that as well to appreciate it all!

I seriously can't believe these were taken on one of the biggest streets in Cairo, looks like some back-ally in the ghetto...and the one of the donkey and the watermelons is an amazing photograph but i have to agree with claire kiefer, makes me kind of sad!

anyhow, great shots sweetie and thanks for sharing!!

The photos are amazing even though they show such poverty. I forget sometimes how lucky we are.
